National Fire Prevention Week Begins
Today marks the beginning of National Fire Prevention Week. While we don’t personally put the wet stuff on the red stuff, we do get dispatched to structure fire calls.
Fall has begun, and with it colder days are ahead. So we’re starting off our National Fire Prevention Week posts with a reminder to have your fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected, before the cold sets in and you start using that fireplace.
Did you know that nearly half of house fires in the US occur between December and January? And about 25% of those fires are caused by creosote buildup. The good thing is that this is easily managed through regular cleaning and inspections of your fireplace and chimney. The frequency of cleaning will vary based on how much you use your fireplace, your chimney sweeping company should be able to provide a good recommendation. There are also many creosote preventing additives that you can get that should help mitigate the creosote buildup.
Many chimney companies are having discount specials right now as well so it’s a great time to get it done! You can find more cold weather fire safety tips at: www.nfpa.org/winter
