Auxiliary to the Greater Manassas Volunteer Rescue Squad Selected as AVAVRS Auxiliary of the Year
October 12, 2023. It was announced today by the Auxiliary to the Virginia’s Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads (AVAVRS) that the Auxiliary to the Greater Manassas Volunteer Rescue Squad (GMVRS) was selected as the State’s top Auxiliary for its work to support and service to the community and during the past year. Auxiliary members, in the featured picture at one of their recent monthly meetings at Hutton Hall in Manassas, have been active at the AVAVRS level through their participation in regional and statewide meetings and trainings, but their focus has been serving our community and supporting the GMVRS through direct participation in Squad activities and raising funds.
Ron Angus, the Auxiliary’s President, (pictured in the top row on the left) said, “It is indeed an honor for the Auxiliary to accept this recognition. It’s a team effort, with each member contributing to the many acts of service we do during the course of the year. They are unsung heroes who do good for our community and our first responders. “
Some of their community activities supported during the past year include:
Donating money and participating to the Prince William County Adult Detention Center’s (ADC) high school opioid awareness program, donating to the Toys for Tots program, hosting a local church’s Kids Against Hunger food packing drive, providing funding and serving a Thanksgiving meal at the Alternative Paths Training School for faculty and students, hosting the Prince William ADC and Manassas City PD’s Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes, and hosting monthly blood drives with the American Red Cross at Hutton Hall.
Likewise, the Auxiliary provided funds to support the GMVRS as well as the City’s Fire and Rescue System at Fire Station 521 by such activities as purchasing coffee for the Station, supporting a System-wide autism awareness training by purchasing needed training supplies and equipment for all the System’s apparatus, supplementing the Squad’s annual installation banquet, contributing to the restoration of the Squad’s antique ambulance and scholarship program, as well as providing meals for Squad Board and membership meetings.
